Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Il museo dell’Accademia del  cinema più grande al mondo

A Los Angeles, la “città delle stelle”, dal 30 settembre scorso ha aperto i battenti il nuovo Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Si tratta di uno spazio imponente che non poteva mancare nella metropoli californiana in cui le esigenze e le suggestioni di Hollywood sono parte costitutiva di quella realtà. Ma si tratta anche di un importante intervento architettonico, realizzato grazie al genio creativo dell’italiano Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaborazione con lo studio Gensler di San Francisco e lo studio SPF:a di Los Angeles.

Situato sul famoso “Miracle Mile” nel cuore di Los Angeles, all’incrocio tra Wilshire Boulevard e Farfax Avenute, il museo conserva e dà nuova vita all’ex grande magazzino della May Company del 1939, ora ribattezzato Saban Building. Questo, secondo le parole di Renzo Piano, “è un meraviglioso esempio di Streamline Moderne, che preserva il modo in cui le persone immaginavano il futuro nel 1939. Il nuovo museo offre perciò l’opportunità di onorare il passato creando un edificio per il futuro; anzi per la possibilità di molti futuri”.

Celebrando la sua storia e immaginando nuove possibilità, le aggiunte all’edificio che risalgono al 1946 sono state rimosse e sostituite con un edificio sferico che presenta il David Geffen Theatre da 1000 posti a sedere e il Dolby Family Terrace con 288 posti e vista su Hollywood, il sito dei sogni. Lo Sphere Building di Renzo Piano sembra sollevarsi da terra verso un viaggio immaginario. È l’opera che ha colpito maggiormente Bill Kramer, presidente dell’Academy, il quale la definisce “gioiello che corona la struttura”.

La riconversione dello storico magazzino risalente agli anni Trenta, valorizzata dalla sfera in vetro e cemento, ha consentito di creare un edificio di circa 28.000 metri quadrati in cui è possibile ospitare anche collezioni permanenti e mostre temporanee. Un omaggio davvero spettacolare al mondo del cinema e alla storia dell’industria cinematografica. Uno spazio espositivo imponente, funzionale, ed  esteticamente gradevole. Un vero e proprio tempio degli Oscar che presenta pure una piazza all’aperto e una terrazza sul tetto, oltre all’immancabile area shop e ristorante.

L’Academy Museum of Motion Pictures era atteso da molti anni poiché Hollywod, paradossalmente, presentava questo deficit che oggi è stato sanato. La città degli angeli, la città delle stelle, la città del cinema ha finalmente un luogo prestigioso in cui tutte, o quasi, le suggestioni afferenti alla settima arte trovano ospitalità, valore e l’opportunità di conservare quell’immaginario che da oltre un secolo vivacizza il mondo intero. Memorabilia, gallerie fotografiche, elementi e vestiti di scena, e naturalmente gli Oscar hanno una casa. Per dirla con Tom Hanks hanno la “lanterna magica più grande del mondo”.
